How we make your wireless network work and work better.  What is WiFI?  Besides that thing that we can’t do without at the traffic light, in bed in the evening or at work…  WiFi is one of the most used and least understood technologies.

It’s difficult to explain why sometimes wireless connections work fine and sometimes it seems there’s nothing you can do to connect.  But hey I’m a thrillseeker!

Think of your WiFi signal like a pebble dropping into a pond.  Waves propagate outward in all directions.  If they encounter an obstacle they move around or reflect back.  Your wireless signal is similar to this in that when a clean signal is observed the signal reading is relatively close around the point of origin.

Several things can impact the quality of the signal.  Not the least of which is interference from other WiFi broadcasts.  Radios (bet you didn’t realize this is all based on radios eh?) broadcast information differently.  FM and AM for instance use the modulation (that’s the M in FM) of the signal to convey meaningful information.  WiFi simply encapsulates (think “hugs” like the way the delicious, delicious corn flour outside of a corn dog cocoons a delicious meaty hot dog) data into discrete packets for transmission and then broadcasts in a selected channel.  Just like a channel on a TV, your device is “tuned” to your WiFi radio.

So what happens when a big ole elevator full of iPhone toting Millennials (all with their person hotspots on) jump into your close proximity?  Well, it’s bedlam.  Bedlam I say!  At least it’s bedlam from the perspective of the WiFi channels we have to deal with.  You end up with an environment that has many points all competing for space on that limited channel.  You can’t really turn up the volume on your WiFi signal (like turning up the volume on a radio) but you can look to see what channels are being used and if you have smart radios, you can adjust your signal to a lesser used channel.

Creating a great WiFi network is a matter of design, implementation and maintenance in just the right doses.  It’s takes diligence and communication to make an environment which is functional for everyone.
